The foundation matters

What Makes a Concrete Floor Last

The slab underneath determines how well any finish performs. Uneven surfaces, soft spots and moisture problems show through polished, epoxy or stained concrete, so we address the base before applying anything decorative.

When a slab needs leveling, self-leveling underlayment brings it into tolerance. If radiant heating is part of the plan, heated floor underlayment encases the tubing in the same operation. Once the slab is sound and flat, we move to the finish layer.

From there, the options open up. A polished concrete finish creates a reflective, hard surface. An epoxy floor coating delivers seamless protection. Stained concrete adds warmth and colour, while a micro-topping resurfaces worn concrete without demolition.

The sequence

How a Concrete Floor Gets Built in Pittsburgh

  1. Inspect and plan

We examine the existing slab for moisture, damage, flatness and any old coatings, then recommend the finish that fits the room and the slab condition.

  2. Prep the surface

Grinding or shot-blasting removes old finishes and contaminants. We repair cracks and pour self-leveling underlayment where the slab is out of spec.

  3. Build the finish

We apply the chosen system, primer through topcoat, following manufacturer specs. Polished, epoxy, stained or micro-topping, each layer is applied with precision.

  4. Cure and handoff

The floor cures per spec. We walk you through the finished space and provide care instructions so your concrete floor stays beautiful for years.

Choose your finish

Concrete Floor Finishes for Different Spaces

The room's use and your aesthetic guide the finish choice. Polished concrete works well in open-concept areas and basements, offering a bright, durable surface that is easy to maintain. Epoxy coatings suit utility rooms and workshops, providing chemical resistance and a seamless look.

For colour and warmth, stained concrete brings depth to kitchens and sunrooms without grout lines. A micro-topping overlay refreshes tired concrete by laying a thin, seamless new surface over sound but dated slabs, avoiding the cost and mess of tear-out.

Common questions

Concrete Floor Questions, Answered

Finishes, prep, cost and what concrete floors are like to live with in Pittsburgh.

We finish concrete floors polished, epoxy-coated, stained or with a micro-topping overlay, plus the self-leveling and heated-floor underlayment prep that goes underneath them.
Yes. Most residential floor work is done over an existing slab. We assess it for moisture, cracks and flatness, grind or repair as needed, and pour self-leveling underlayment if the surface is out of tolerance before the finish.
They are no colder than tile and pair well with radiant heat encased in heated-floor underlayment. They are hard, which is also why they are durable, low-maintenance and allergen-free, with no grout lines or carpet to hold dust.
Concrete floor finishes generally run $6 to $15 per square foot depending on the finish, the slab condition and how much prep or underlayment is needed. We confirm it with a written, itemised quote after seeing the slab.
We grind or shot-blast the surface and pour self-leveling underlayment where the slab is uneven. A finish only looks as good as the slab under it, so flat comes before anything decorative.

★★★★★

Polished the whole main floor after a reno. It is bright, dead easy to clean, and the self-leveler they poured first means there is not a single high spot.

Epoxy floor in the basement utility room. Seamless, wipes clean, and they built it up in proper coats instead of one quick layer.

Stained the kitchen floor a warm brown. The colour has depth you do not get from tile, and there are no grout lines to scrub.

Micro-topping over an old cracked slab in the sunroom. New seamless surface for a fraction of a tear-out, and you cannot tell what was underneath.
