Where Concrete Driveways Fail, and How Pittsburgh Pours Avoid It
Most cracked driveways in Pittsburgh trace back to the same two problems: a base that was never properly compacted, and a mix that wasn't air-entrained for freeze-thaw. When January temperatures swing 40 degrees in a week, water trapped under a slab expands, and a slab sitting on soft fill has nowhere to go but up. An exposed aggregate driveway or a stamped concrete driveway poured over a well-compacted gravel base with the right mix design handles those swings without cracking.
Control joints are cut at planned intervals before the concrete sets, so any minor shrinkage follows a straight line rather than a random fracture. A penetrating sealer applied after the cure period closes the surface against road salt and meltwater. The same attention to base prep and mix spec carries into every other slab on the property, stamped patio concrete, front-entry steps, and basement floor pours all follow the same standard.
Curious what a driveway replacement actually costs before scheduling a visit? The concrete cost guide breaks down pricing by slab size and finish type.
What to expect
From First Measure to Final Concrete Slab, How a Job Runs
-
On-site measure and written quote
We come to the property, measure the pour area, note drainage grades and access conditions, discuss finish options, and hand you a written itemised quote with a firm price before we leave.
-
Tear-out, excavation and base prep
Start day begins with protecting landscaping and removing the old slab or excavating to depth. Gravel goes in, gets graded and compacted, and forms are set to the correct elevation and slope.
-
Concrete placement and finishing
The mix arrives, gets placed and screeded, then finished to the surface you selected, broom, exposed aggregate, stamped or polished. Control joints are cut at the right spacing before the slab sets.
-
Cure period, sealing and handoff
After the concrete reaches strength, the surface is sealed where specified. We clean the site, walk the finished slab with you, and hand over a written cure-and-care schedule with clear timelines for foot and vehicle traffic.
Common questions
Pittsburgh Homeowners Ask, Concrete Questions Answered
Straight answers on permits, yard access, finish selection and workmanship coverage for residential concrete in Pittsburgh.
Replaced our crumbling front steps and ran a new walkway out to the driveway. The rise is even on every step, the broom finish matches, and the railing posts line up clean.
Poured a new basement floor after the old one was torn out. It came out flat enough that the laminate went down without a single shim. Tidy crew and a clear cure schedule.
Broom-finish pool deck and a fire-pit pad in the same week. The slope drains away from the house exactly like they promised and the colour is consistent across both pours.
Built a poured retaining wall to hold back the side yard and tied a new sidewalk into it. Engineered, drained right, and it has not budged through a full freeze-thaw.
