Pittsburgh Foundation Concrete Built Below Grade

Your foundation sits out of sight, carrying the entire weight of the house. We excavate to bearing soil, form and reinforce footings and walls to the engineer's spec, pour and cure them properly, then waterproof and drain them so they stay dry. New construction, additions, or an aging foundation showing cracks and seepage, we handle all of it with a free written estimate and a firm schedule.

  • Excavation to bearing soil
  • Rebar and forms to engineer spec
  • Waterproofing and drainage included

How Foundation Concrete Carries the Load

A foundation's job is to transfer the building's weight safely into the ground. That starts with the footing, which must sit on stable, undisturbed soil at the depth the engineer specifies. We excavate to that depth, confirm the bearing capacity, and form the footing to size so it spreads the load evenly.

The walls rise from the footing, formed straight and plumb, reinforced with rebar tied to the drawings, then poured and consolidated so no voids or cold joints weaken the concrete. Waterproofing the exterior and installing weeping tile keeps groundwater from pushing through.

Curing is the final step. We protect the concrete from rapid drying and temperature swings so it gains strength properly. Only after the slab has cured do we backfill, and only then is the basement ready for the next phase. Every residential concrete project we pour follows the same discipline.

The sequence

Pouring Foundation Concrete in Pittsburgh Step by Step

  1. Dig and verify bearing

We excavate to the engineered depth, expose the bearing soil, and confirm it matches the geotechnical report before layout begins.

  2. Set forms and rebar

Footing and wall forms are set to line and grade, rebar is tied per the structural drawings, and the work is inspected before concrete arrives.

  3. Place and finish concrete

Concrete is delivered to the mix design on the drawings, placed in lifts, consolidated to remove air, and finished level and true.

  4. Cure, strip, and protect

The slab cures under protection, forms are stripped on schedule, waterproofing is applied, and drainage is restored before backfill.

When trouble shows

Addressing Foundation Cracks and Leaks Early

Small cracks and damp corners are the first warning signs. A hairline in the wall or a wet spot in the corner after heavy rain means water is finding a path through the concrete. Sealing foundation cracks early stops them from widening and prevents water from entering.

Larger problems like bowing walls, stair-step cracks, or persistent seepage need structural attention. Foundation repair addresses the root cause, whether it is settlement, lateral pressure, or poor drainage. Underpinning deepens or widens a footing when the original cannot carry the load. Pairing any repair with exterior waterproofing ensures the fix lasts.

Common questions

Foundation Questions Answered

Installation, repair, waterproofing and what foundation work involves in Pittsburgh.

Yes. Foundation installation is formed, reinforced and poured to the structural engineer's drawings, footing size, wall thickness, rebar and mix design, and is ready for inspection before the pour.
Watch for stair-step or horizontal cracks, bowing walls, doors and windows that stick, sloping floors or a damp basement corner. Any of those is worth a look, and crack repair early is far cheaper than structural repair later.
Yes. Foundation waterproofing excavates the affected wall, addresses the cracks, applies a proper waterproof membrane and restores drainage and weeping tile so groundwater is carried away instead of pushing in.
Underpinning extends a foundation deeper or wider when the original footing cannot carry the load, common when adding a storey, lowering a basement, or correcting a footing on poor soil.
Yes. We pour footings and foundation walls for additions, tied in or isolated from the existing foundation as the engineer specifies, and matched so the addition settles with the house, not against it.

Footings and a foundation wall for a two-storey addition. Poured to the engineer's drawings, passed inspection first try, and they sent photos at every stage.

Had a crack that leaked every spring. They excavated the wall, sealed it properly and redid the weeping tile. Bone dry through the next melt.

Underpinning to lower our basement. Careful, methodical work, and they explained every step so we understood what was happening under the house.

Caught a few small cracks early on their assessment and sealed them before winter. Honest about what needed doing now versus what could wait.
