Building Concrete Foundations in Pittsburgh Right

A solid foundation is the contract between the structure and the earth. We build new foundations for custom homes, additions and renovations in Pittsburgh, following the engineer's specifications for depth, width, reinforcement and finish. One crew handles the full sequence from excavation through waterproofing. Free written estimate before we start.

How Concrete Slab Installation Differs from Repair

A new foundation is poured once and must be right the first time. It carries the entire load of the structure, resists frost heave and groundwater, and settles uniformly with the house. Any deviation from the engineer's drawings becomes a structural problem that is expensive to fix later.

We start by confirming the bearing soil against the geotechnical report, then excavate to the frost line depth specified in the drawings. Footings are formed, reinforced with rebar tied to the layout, and poured in one continuous pour. Once the footing cures, walls are formed straight and true, rebar is placed through the height, embeds for utilities are set, and the wall is poured and consolidated. Forms come off on schedule, and the exterior is waterproofed and drained before backfill.

For additions, the new footing ties into or isolates from the existing foundation per the engineer's detail, so the new and old structures move as one unit. This is where foundation crack repair and underpinning work differ from new installation. We also handle basement waterproofing as part of the handoff.

Steps to Pour a New Foundation in Pittsburgh

  1. Stake and survey

We lay out the footing and wall positions from the engineer's drawings, confirm the bearing soil depth with the geotechnical report, and mark the excavation limits.

  2. Excavate and inspect

Footings are dug to the frost line depth, the bearing soil is exposed and inspected, and any soft spots or over-excavation are corrected before forming.

  3. Form, reinforce and pour footing

Footing forms are set, rebar is tied to the layout, concrete is placed and vibrated to consolidate, and the footing cures before wall forming begins.

  4. Form wall, set embeds, pour and strip

Wall forms are erected plumb and straight, rebar is placed through the height, plumbing and electrical embeds are set, concrete is poured, and forms are stripped on the cure schedule.

  5. Waterproof and drain

The exterior wall is waterproofed with a membrane, weeping tile is installed at the footing to carry groundwater away, and the site is ready for backfill.

Protection before backfill

Why Waterproofing Cannot Wait

A new foundation poured in spring will face its first heavy rain and snowmelt before summer. If the exterior is not waterproofed and drained before backfill, groundwater will find every crack and cold joint, and the basement will leak from day one.

We apply a waterproofing membrane to the exterior wall and install weeping tile at the footing to collect and carry groundwater away from the structure. This is not optional and is included in every foundation installation we do. The same protection applies to the basement floor that sits inside the walls.

Common questions

Foundation Installation Questions, Answered

Drawings, footings, additions and waterproofing handoff for new foundations in Pittsburgh.

Yes. Every new foundation install is built to the structural engineer's drawings, footing sizes, wall thicknesses, rebar layouts, mix designs, and is ready for inspection at each stage before concrete is ordered or backfill goes in.
Yes. Additions usually require the new foundation to tie in or isolate from the existing footing per the engineer's design, so the new structure settles with the house rather than against it. We pour to that detail.
Below the frost line, which is typically several feet in Pittsburgh, and confirmed against the engineer's geotechnical info. The exact depth depends on the soil, the load and the local code requirements; the drawings specify it.
Yes, as part of installation. Foundation waterproofing and weeping tile go on before backfill, protecting the new structure from groundwater for the long haul.
It depends on the size, the soil, the engineering and access. We put exact numbers in a written, itemised quote after reviewing the drawings and walking the site, so the price is firm against the actual project.
