Pittsburgh Retaining Walls That Stop Soil Movement
Soil and water pressure push constantly on a retaining wall, so it must be engineered to resist that load, not just stacked to look good. Pittsburgh Concrete designs and builds poured and block retaining walls with proper footings, rebar reinforcement and drainage systems. We also repair walls that have started to lean, crack or fail. Free written estimate on every project.

Soil and water load
How a Concrete Retaining Wall Stays Stable
A retaining wall is an engineered structure that resists the weight and pressure of soil and groundwater. The visible face is only part of the story. What matters is the footing depth, the rebar pattern, and the drainage system behind the wall that prevents water from building up and pushing it over.
We build poured concrete retaining walls as a single monolithic pour on a footing sized to the height and soil conditions, with rebar tied through the full height and a drainage layer with weeping tile behind it.
A block retaining wall uses the same engineering principles with cored and reinforced units. When an existing wall is moving or failing, wall repair starts by fixing the drainage or footing problem that caused it. Retaining walls often connect to patio grading and other outdoor concrete on the property.
Construction sequence
Building a Retaining Wall in Pittsburgh, Step by Step
-
Site evaluation and design
We measure the height, slope and soil type, then calculate the footing size and rebar layout needed to hold the load safely.
-
Excavate and set footing
The footing trench is dug below frost line, and concrete is poured to the engineered depth and width so the wall has a solid base.
-
Form, reinforce and pour
For poured walls, forms are set and rebar is tied in place, then concrete is placed and finished. Block walls are laid and cored with reinforcement.
-
Install drainage and backfill
Drainage board and weeping tile are placed behind the wall to carry water away, then the area is backfilled and graded.
When walls fail
Fixing a Leaning Retaining Wall Before It Fails
A retaining wall does not usually collapse suddenly. It shows signs first: leaning, bulging, horizontal cracks, or soil seeping out at the base. These are warnings that water pressure or a weak footing is winning the battle. Retaining wall repair identifies and fixes the root cause, not just the visible damage.
If caught early, a wall can sometimes be stabilized and repaired in place. If it has moved too far, rebuilding it correctly is the safer choice. We assess the damage honestly and explain whether a poured or block rebuild makes sense for your site.

Retaining Wall Questions Answered
Engineering, drainage, poured versus block and repair for retaining walls in Pittsburgh.
Poured a retaining wall to hold back the side yard. They put real drainage and weeping tile behind it. A full year of freeze-thaw and it has not moved a millimetre.
Our old block wall was bulging. They explained it was a drainage problem, rebuilt it properly with the footing it should have had. Solid now.
Block retaining wall that ties into the patio grading. Engineered, cored and reinforced, and the finish matches everything else in the yard.
They were honest that our leaning wall had moved too far to just patch. Rebuilt it right and walked us through why the first one failed.
