Pittsburgh Retaining Wall Repair Starts with Diagnosis
Water behind the wall is the culprit in nearly every case of leaning, bulging, or shifting concrete. We identify what is actually happening, trace it back to the root cause, and fix that cause rather than just re-stacking blocks that will fail again. Some walls can be saved with drainage work; others need partial or full replacement. Every assessment is free.

The real problem
Why Retaining Wall Repair Requires Drainage Work
A wall that leans is telling you that water has accumulated behind it. The drainage stone has become clogged with silt, the drainage pipe has cracked or was never installed, or the soil is now saturated and pushing. Removing the water pressure is the only way to stop the lean. Rebuilding the wall without fixing the drainage is a temporary fix that costs money twice.
Our process begins with understanding what the wall is doing and why. We look at the lean angle, the bulge pattern, any settling, and then we excavate behind the wall to see the drainage situation firsthand. From there, we determine whether the wall can be repaired in place, needs partial reconstruction, or should be replaced entirely with a properly engineered poured concrete wall or block wall.
This same root-cause approach guides all of our retaining wall work and extends to our foundation repair service, where water and footing issues demand the same diagnostic rigor.
The repair sequence
How Pittsburgh Concrete Repairs Retaining Walls
-
Measure and assess the wall
We quantify the lean, note any bulging or settling, and examine the slope above and below. This tells us whether the wall is in early failure or advanced failure, and narrows down the likely causes.
-
Excavate and inspect drainage
We dig behind the wall to expose the drainage stone and pipe, check for clogs, breaks, or missing components, and inspect the back face of the wall for cracks, spalling, or structural damage that needs addressing.
-
Rebuild drainage and reset blocks
New drainage stone is placed against the wall back, a new drainage pipe is installed at the footing and routed to daylight, and any leaning block sections are reset to plumb. Poured walls are assessed for in-place repair or replacement.
-
Backfill and verify
The excavation is backfilled with the drainage path intact, the wall is monitored after rain or snowmelt to confirm the lean has stopped, and we provide guidance on long-term monitoring and maintenance.
Honest assessment
Not Every Wall Can Be Repaired Responsibly
Repair works when the wall structure is fundamentally sound and the cause (usually drainage) can be fixed without a complete rebuild. It fails when the wall was undersized from the start, when the footing is inadequate across its length, or when the lean has exceeded what a repair can correct.
On every wall we evaluate, we tell you which category it falls into. If repair is just delaying failure, our quote will recommend a new poured wall or block wall built to code with proper drainage and footing depth.

Common questions
Retaining Wall Repair Questions, Answered
Leaning walls, drainage rebuild, when to repair vs replace and root-cause diagnosis.
Three contractors quoted to rebuild the wall. Pittsburgh Concrete diagnosed it as a drainage failure, fixed the drainage, reset two block sections, and the wall has stayed put for two years. Fraction of the rebuild price.
Honest that our wall was past repair and a new one was the right call. Could have charged us for a repair that was going to fail. New wall is bombproof. Trust earned.
Drainage pipe behind our poured wall had collapsed years ago. They excavated, replaced it, monitored the wall through spring. No more bulging. Cause was the answer.
Diagnosis was free and detailed. Showed me exactly what was happening and what the options were. Picked the partial rebuild, exactly as quoted, exactly to schedule.
