Pittsburgh Driveway Repair Before Replacement
Cracks, spalling and surface wear don't always mean a new driveway. Pittsburgh Concrete fixes what can be fixed, overlays slabs that are structurally sound but visually tired, and tells you straight when the base has failed and replacement is the only honest path. Free assessment, no pressure.
- Straight repair-or-replace call
- Crack sealing, patching, overlay
- Free written estimate included
Sound slab, tired surface
Why Driveway Repair Beats Full Replacement
A driveway that looks worn out is often still structurally intact underneath. The base is holding, the slab is level, and what you see is surface damage: cracks that haven't widened, spalled edges, freeze-thaw pitting, and discoloration. These are fixable without a tear-out.
Repair work seals cracks before water gets in, patches spalled corners back to profile, and grinds out surface damage so it won't catch a shovel or trap water. When the whole slab needs a cosmetic refresh, an overlay (resurfacing) goes down over the prepared concrete and gives you a uniform, fresh look in one pour.
The line between repair and replacement is base failure. If the slab is heaving, settling unevenly, or pulling away from steps and walks, the foundation underneath has moved and a new concrete driveway is the honest answer. We also handle stamped finishes, exposed aggregate, and protective sealing to keep repairs lasting.
The repair sequence
How Driveway Repair Gets Done in Pittsburgh
-
On-site evaluation
We inspect the slab for base movement, crack patterns, spalling extent, and surface condition. This tells us whether repair is viable or whether the foundation has failed and replacement is necessary.
-
Saw-cut and excavate
For localized damage, we cut clean lines around the failed area with a concrete saw, remove the broken material, and expose the base below so the new patch will bond to sound substrate.
-
Base repair and pour
The base is compacted or rebuilt as needed. Reinforcement is added if the patch is large. Fresh concrete is placed into the cavity at the same thickness as the surrounding slab.
-
Finish and cure
The patch is finished to match the existing texture (brushed, broom, or stamped). For full resurfacing, an overlay covers the entire prepared slab in one continuous pour, creating a uniform appearance.
Overlay and protection
Resurfacing Plus Sealing Extends Driveway Life
When spot repairs would leave visible seams across the driveway, resurfacing is the cleaner solution. A thin concrete overlay goes down over the prepared slab and gives the whole surface a fresh, uniform finish without demolition.
After repair or resurfacing, driveway sealing is the next step. A quality sealer closes the pores and protects against water penetration and de-icing salt, which are the main culprits behind the damage you just fixed. If the assessment reveals the slab truly cannot be saved, we offer brushed finishes, colored concrete, exposed aggregate, and stamped patterns for a complete new pour.

Driveway Repair Questions, Answered
Repair vs replace, cracks, spalling, resurfacing and what is honest to fix in Pittsburgh.
Quoted a resurface instead of a full tear-out because the slab was still sound. Saved us thousands and the new finish looks like a new driveway from the street.
Spalled corner at the curb cut, fixed cleanly with a colour-matched patch. The seam is barely visible and it has not cracked again through the winter.
They were honest that part of the driveway needed replacing because the base had failed, and the other part could be repaired. Did both, exactly as they explained.
Patched several surface cracks before they could grow. The seal is back on, the slab looks decades younger, and they said it should outlast me at this point.
