Pittsburgh Concrete Sidewalks & Walkways, Poured Flat, Sloped to Drain

Pittsburgh winters turn a poorly graded path into a liability. Pittsburgh Concrete forms sidewalks and walkways on compacted base, pitches them to shed water, and finishes them for grip. Free written estimate.

Three things a slab has to do

Where Concrete Walkways Fail, and How We Prevent It

Most walkway problems trace back to one of three decisions made at the pour: the base wasn't compacted, the cross-slope was skipped, or the finish was too smooth. Any one of those shortcuts shows up fast in Pittsburgh's freeze-thaw cycle. Standing water turns to ice, a soft base heaves the slab, and a trowel-finished surface becomes a skating rink by January.

Pittsburgh Concrete addresses all three before the truck arrives. The sub-base is excavated and compacted to a consistent depth, forms are set to a deliberate two-percent cross-pitch so meltwater moves away from the house, and the surface is broom-finished for year-round traction. Control joints are laid out on a grid so seasonal movement cracks along a clean line rather than across the middle of a panel. See our concrete sidewalk service for specifics on base depth and mix design.

Yards with a decorative theme get a different treatment. A stamped concrete patio already in place sets the pattern; the walkway is formed to match it in colour and texture so the two surfaces read as one continuous design. Exposed-aggregate finishes work the same way and add natural grip from the stone surface itself. Browse the decorative walkway page for finish options, or check the concrete cost guide for typical project ranges.

How a Pittsburgh Concrete Sidewalk Gets Built

  1. On-site layout and grade check

We walk the proposed route with you, measure the width, confirm how the path connects to steps or the driveway, and read the existing grade to plan drainage direction.

  2. Excavation and base prep

The path corridor is dug to the required depth, granular fill is placed in lifts and compacted, and forms are staked to the finished elevation and cross-slope.

  3. Pour, screed and finish

Concrete is placed and screeded flat to the forms. Standard paths get a broom finish for traction; decorative pours get stamping or exposed-aggregate treatment before the surface sets.

  4. Joints, curing and tie-in

Control joints are tooled or saw-cut on the planned layout. The slab cures under a curing compound or wet burlap, then the path is tied cleanly into adjacent concrete at both ends.

New path, upgrade, or repair

Choosing the Right Walkway Approach for Your Yard

Not every walkway project calls for a full pour. The right scope depends on what the existing concrete is doing. Here is a straightforward way to think through it: if the base has shifted and panels are heaved more than an inch, a tear-out and new slab is the cleaner fix. If the base is still solid and the surface is just worn or lightly cracked, walkway repair costs a fraction of replacement and can include resurfacing to restore the finish.

For yards starting from scratch, the choice between a plain broom-finished concrete sidewalk and a decorative pour comes down to how the path fits the rest of the property. A side-yard utility path from the gate to the garage door rarely needs stamping. A front-entry walk that runs past the garden and up to the porch is a different story. Matching it to an exposed aggregate patio or tying it into the front entry steps makes the whole yard feel intentional rather than assembled piece by piece. We confirm the scope and price on a free site visit before any work is scheduled.

Homeowner questions

Planning a Pittsburgh Concrete Walkway, Common Questions

Drainage, finish options, repair versus replacement, and cure times for concrete sidewalks and walkways.

A slight cross-slope, usually around two percent, lets rain and meltwater run off instead of pooling and then freezing. A flat or back-sloped path becomes an ice hazard every thaw, so we build the slope into the base and forms.
A broom finish is the standard for traction. Decorative walkways in exposed-aggregate or textured stamped concrete also stay grippy wet, while a smooth trowel finish does not and is not used outdoors.
Yes. We match the finish, pattern and colour to the driveway, patio or steps already in place so the new sidewalk reads as part of the yard, not a patch.
Often, yes. If the base is still sound, walkway repair can re-level, patch or resurface the path for far less than a full tear-out. We confirm the base on a free visit before recommending either.
Most walkways are placed in a day. You can walk on it within 24 to 48 hours, with the exact timing in the cure schedule we hand over. Decorative finishes are sealed once the slab has cured.

New front walkway that finally drains. The old one iced over every winter. They built a proper slope into it and it has been clear since.

Stamped a walkway from the driveway to the back gate and matched it to our patio. You would never guess it was poured years after the patio.

Our side-yard path was heaved and cracked. They re-levelled and repaired it instead of pushing a full replacement. Honest and tidy work.

Broom finish, dead flat, and the joints line up with the steps and driveway. Small job done with the same care as a big one.
