Sidewalk Repair in Pittsburgh

Concrete walkways fail in pieces, not all at once. One section settles, another spalls along the edge, a third cracks through. Pittsburgh Concrete inspects the whole walk, identifies which sections can be lifted back to grade, which can be patched in place, and which need to come out and be re-poured. You pay only for what actually needs fixing, not for replacing sound concrete.

Smart repair strategy

Why Sidewalk Repair Beats Full Replacement

Replacing an entire sidewalk when only two sections are broken is like replacing your roof because one shingle is loose. The concrete slab under most of your walk is fine. The base is stable. The joints are holding. Repair targets the actual failures and leaves the rest alone, which cuts the cost in half or more.

We do not recommend repair when the whole slab is compromised. If the base has failed everywhere, the joints are crumbling throughout, or the concrete is too thin to be sound, a new concrete sidewalk is the honest answer. We tell you that in the estimate.

The same logic applies to our patio repair work and driveway repair calls. Fix what is broken, leave what is working, and save the homeowner real money.

The repair sequence

How We Fix a Failing Sidewalk in Pittsburgh

  1. Inspect every joint

We walk the entire length with you, mark cracks, settlement, spalling, and joint failures, and photograph each problem area so the scope is clear before we quote.

  2. Lift settled sections

Slabs that have sunk but are not cracked can be raised back to grade using slab-jacking, where material is injected underneath to lift the concrete back into place.

  3. Patch surface damage

Spalled edges and minor surface wear get patched with a repair mortar that bonds to the existing concrete and matches the color and texture as closely as possible.

  4. Replace broken sections

Sections that are cracked through, severely damaged, or have failed bases are cut out cleanly and re-poured to match the surrounding walk in finish, slope, and joint pattern.

When repair is not the answer

Honest Assessment of Sidewalk Repair Limits

Repair works when failures are isolated, the rest of the slab is sound, and the base can be corrected. It fails when the whole walk is past saving, when fixing one section will just move the problem to the next section a year later, or when the concrete is too thin or poorly built to hold a repair.

We assess that reality on every call. If the walk is doomed and repair is just delaying the inevitable, the quote will recommend full sidewalk replacement instead. For walks with only color or sealer issues, see our decorative sidewalk refresh options.

Common questions

Sidewalk Repair Questions, Answered

Lifting settled slabs, patching spalled edges, sectional replacement and when repair stops making sense.

We assess each section against three questions, is the slab structurally sound, is the base under it correctable, and is the failure isolated. If yes to all three, repair works. If no to any, that section needs sectional replacement or the whole walk needs to come out.
Often, yes. Slab-jacking can raise a settled but otherwise sound section by injecting material underneath to lift it back to grade. Where the slab is cracked along with the settlement, sectional replacement is the better call.
Sectional replacements match the surrounding slab in finish and elevation; patches match in color and texture as closely as possible but a careful eye can sometimes see the repair line. We tell you that up front so the expectation is realistic.
Done correctly, sectional replacements last as long as the surrounding walk; lifted slabs last as long as the base correction holds; patched edges last as long as the bond holds. Each repair has a realistic lifespan; we share it in the quote.
Most walkway repair visits are a few hours to a day; sectional replacements that include cure time stretch over a couple of days. The full schedule is in the written quote so you know what to plan around.

★★★★★

They quoted three options, full replacement, sectional replacement on the two bad bits, or slab-jacking and a patch. We chose the middle one, half the cost, walk is solid two seasons in.

One corner had settled badly. Lifted back to grade, joint sealed, no replacement needed. Less money than I expected and the walk looks right again.

Honest assessment that two sections were past repair and the rest were fine. Replaced only those, matched perfectly. Real money saved versus the replacement quote from the other guys.

Spalled edge along the road-salt side got patched with a matching mortar. Bond has held, the patch is barely visible now. Worth doing instead of replacing the whole section.
