Dry Basements Start With Interior Waterproofing
A wet basement in Pittsburgh often means the outside of the foundation cannot be reached. Interior waterproofing solves this by running drainage tile along the slab perimeter, collecting water before it spreads across the floor, and pumping it away. Pittsburgh Concrete sizes and installs the complete system, from trench to sump pit to sealed wall. Free written estimate included.
- Perimeter drainage tile routed to sump
- Pump sized to measured inflow
- Wall sealed to dry inward
When outside is not an option
How Interior Drainage Keeps the Slab Dry
Exterior waterproofing is the gold standard when you can dig around the outside of the foundation. Many Pittsburgh homes, though, sit on tight lots with decks, garages, or mature landscaping that makes exterior work impractical or too costly. Interior waterproofing is the proven alternative that stops the leak from the inside.
The system works by intercepting groundwater before it reaches the slab. We cut a trench along the basement perimeter, lay drainage tile on stone, slope it to a sump pit, and install a pump to move water out. The wall is sealed at the slab line so water drops into the tile instead of bleeding across the floor. The wall itself dries inward, and the basement becomes usable again.
This approach pairs well with basement crack sealing if there are active leaks in the wall, and it works alongside new slab work or renovation projects that need a dry foundation to build on.
Installation sequence
The Interior Waterproofing Process, Step by Step
-
Assess water entry and slab depth
We identify where water reaches the slab, measure the existing concrete thickness, locate the best sump pit position, and confirm the discharge path before cutting anything.
-
Cut and excavate the perimeter
The basement floor is cut along the wall line, the trench is dug to the correct depth, and any failed or clogged old drainage is removed so the new tile sits in clean stone.
-
Lay tile, set pit, install pump
Drainage tile is placed on a stone bed, sloped toward the sump pit at the low point, the pump and discharge line are connected, and the system is tested with water to confirm flow.
-
Backfill, pour, and seal the wall
Stone backfill is compacted around the tile, the slab is poured to lock the system in place, and the wall face is sealed so groundwater cannot cross the slab surface.
The right tool for the right job
Interior Waterproofing Solves a Specific Problem
Interior waterproofing is not a foundation repair. If the wall is cracking structurally or if there is a known exterior cause that can be reached, exterior foundation waterproofing is still the better choice. Interior systems excel when the outside is off-limits and the goal is a dry basement floor.
The pump is the only moving part you maintain, and it runs only when water arrives. In Pittsburgh's spring melt season, a battery backup pump keeps the basement dry even if the power goes out. The basement stays dry, finishes stay intact, and the system has been proven through decades of use in homes just like yours.

What Pittsburgh Homeowners Say About Their Interior Waterproofing
We could not dig up the front of the house. Interior system put in, sump pit cut, dry basement two springs running. Honest about the system being the right tool here.
Existing finished basement, leaks in three corners. They opened only what they had to, installed the tile and sump, closed it back up clean. The pump runs, basement is dry.
They explained why interior was the answer in our situation and not just upselling exterior. The system has worked through every melt since. Trust earned.
Battery backup pump was their recommendation and we are glad we listened. Lost power for a day this spring; basement stayed dry the whole time. Worth every dollar.
