Basement Walkout Concrete Built for Pittsburgh Yards

Opening a basement to daylight and the yard requires precision grading, proper drainage, and concrete work that holds through freeze-thaw cycles. We handle the grade cut, exterior landing, steps, and the retaining wall that keeps the slope stable, so your new walkout functions year after year.

The walkout challenge

Why Walkout Basement Concrete Fails Without Proper Planning

A basement walkout is a door at grade level, which means the yard outside must slope downward and water must have somewhere to go. When the work is done carelessly, the landing puddles every spring, the steps frost-heave, and the door frame shifts out of square. When it is engineered and built correctly, the basement becomes a bright, usable space with a natural connection to the yard.

The concrete work spans multiple systems: the grade cut itself, the retaining structure that holds the upslope, the exterior landing poured with proper slope, the steps built to code rise and run, and the drainage outlet that moves water away. Each piece depends on the others. We coordinate all of it in a single project, often working alongside the structural engineer and the builder.

Inside the basement, the slab around the new door opening may need adjustment too. When retrofitting an existing basement, we check the interior floor elevation and patch or slope it as needed so water that tracks in does not collect. The sequence

How We Execute a Walkout in Pittsburgh

  1. Confirm elevations from the engineer

We review the structural drawings to lock in the door threshold height, the finished yard grade, and the low point where drainage will exit. Stakes are set and the grade cut is marked.

  2. Cut and retain the slope

The yard is excavated down to the walkout elevation. The upslope side is held with a poured concrete retaining wall or block, backfilled with drainage stone, so the cut does not collapse.

  3. Form and pour the landing and steps

The exterior landing is formed with slope away from the door, poured level and smooth. The steps are formed to code rise and run, poured, and finished with a broom texture for winter grip.

  4. Install and test drainage

The drainage outlet at the low point is connected to the property storm system or daylighted to a swale. The landing is graded to feed it. Water is tested before the project closes.

Interior coordination

The Walkout Slab Inside Matters Too

A walkout is not only an exterior project. The threshold sits on the basement slab, and the floor inside the door needs to slope slightly so tracked-in water does not pool. When adding a walkout to an existing basement, we assess the interior slab elevation and patch or slope it as part of the same scope. This keeps the basement dry and the door functioning properly.

Pair the walkout with our basement waterproofing service while the area is open. Many homeowners also upgrade the basement floor finish at the same time. We can coordinate all three in one project.

Common questions

Walkout Basement Questions, Answered

Grade cuts, retained slopes, exterior steps, drainage and adding a walkout to an existing basement.

Yes, in many cases. Adding a walkout retrofit means cutting the existing wall to install the door, cutting the grade outside down to threshold elevation, retaining the new slope, and building the exterior landing and steps. The drawings have to confirm the structural side is feasible.
The exterior landing has to slope away from the door, and the lowest point of the cut needs a drainage outlet, either tied to the property storm system or daylighted with an engineered swale. Without it, the walkout becomes a pond every spring.
Not if they are finished with the right texture and built to the right rise and run. We finish exterior walkout steps with a broom finish or other grip texture so they shed snow and stay walkable through the freeze-thaw cycle.
Almost always, yes. The grade cut has to be held somehow on the upslope side. A poured concrete retaining wall is the most common solution; sometimes block. The wall is engineered with the walkout as a single project.
A walkout retrofit on an existing home is typically several weeks, because there is engineering, structural cutting, grade work, retaining, landing, steps and drainage to sequence. The full timeline is in the written quote.

Walkout retrofit done right. Engineered properly, retaining wall poured, landing and steps clean, drainage actually works through spring melt. Basement gets used every weekend now.

New build walkout poured exactly on the engineer's elevations. Door swings perfect, water leaves the landing every storm, steps are solid through winter. Trusted them on the next house too.

They coordinated with our engineer from drawing one. Grade cut, retaining wall, landing, steps, drainage, all one crew, all the same week of pours. No trade pointing fingers.

Honest about how big a retrofit walkout is. Quote was firm, schedule held, drainage was tested before closing. Worth doing once and right; the basement is finally a real room.
