Sealed Epoxy Floor Coating for Pittsburgh Basements & Shops
A properly prepped concrete slab with a full epoxy system becomes washable, chemical-resistant and seamless. We grind the slab to profile, test for moisture, then apply primer, body coat and topcoat in the right sequence. Basements, workshops, utility rooms and finished living spaces all get the same discipline. Free written estimate on every job.
- Grind or shot-blast every slab
- Moisture testing before coating
- Full system: primer, body, topcoat
Surface matters
How Slab Condition Determines Epoxy Success
Epoxy fails when the concrete underneath is not ready. A sealed, smooth or damp slab will not hold a coating. We grind or shot-blast to open the surface, test moisture levels, and remove any old sealer or contamination before the first coat goes down.
Once the slab is prepped, the epoxy system is chosen to match the room. A basement utility area gets a basic epoxy with a solid or flake topcoat. A workshop or hobby shop gets a tougher epoxy with chemical resistance. A finished living space gets a decorative option, metallic or self-leveling, with a clear high-gloss seal.
The system itself is applied in layers, primer for adhesion, body coat with colour or flake if desired, then topcoat for durability and sheen. This same approach runs through our garage floor coating work. When the slab is uneven, we pair the epoxy with a self-leveling underlayment to bring it into tolerance first. For a worn slab that cannot take epoxy, polished concrete is the alternative.
Installation sequence
The Epoxy Floor Installation Process in Pittsburgh
-
Assess slab and moisture
We inspect the concrete for cracks, old sealers and moisture, confirm the epoxy system fits the room's use, and identify any prep work needed before coating can begin.
-
Grind or blast to profile
The slab is mechanically ground with diamond tools or shot-blasted to the surface profile the manufacturer specifies, opening the concrete so epoxy can bond mechanically rather than sit on a sealed surface.
-
Install primer, body, topcoat
We apply the full epoxy system in sequence, primer for adhesion, body coat with flake or metallic if chosen, then topcoat for chemical resistance and finish, all to manufacturer coverage rates.
-
Cure and handoff
Each layer cures to schedule before the next is applied, the topcoat reaches full chemical resistance after the published cure window, and we provide the timeline for foot traffic and full load.

When Epoxy Is the Right Choice
Interior epoxy is the answer when you need a sealed, washable, chemical-resistant floor in a basement, shop, utility room or any space where spills and stains are a concern.
If you want the concrete itself to be the finish with no coating to maintain, polished concrete is the path. Stained concrete adds colour to the slab and is often sealed with a clear topcoat. Micro-topping is the prep step when the slab is too uneven or damaged for epoxy to bond properly.

Epoxy Floor Questions, Answered
Slab prep, system selection, durability and chemistry resistance for interior epoxy in Pittsburgh.
Epoxy in the basement utility room. Seamless, easy to wipe down, and our laundry-spill incidents stopped being a problem the day they finished the install.
Workshop floor with a chemical-resistant topcoat. Two years of solvents and dropped tools and the surface still wipes clean. They prepped the slab properly first, that is the difference.
Decorative metallic epoxy in our finished basement. Looks like a statement floor, but it cleans like vinyl. Way nicer than the carpet we ripped out.
They explained that polished would not work on our slab and recommended a micro-topping plus epoxy instead. Done right, the new floor looks like a brand-new install.
