Pittsburgh Micro-Topping, New Surface, Same Slab

When a Pittsburgh slab is too patched, pitted, or inconsistent to finish directly, a polymer-modified micro-topping gives it a fresh start. Pittsburgh Concrete preps, primes, and trowels the overlay in thin lifts, millimetres thick, seamless, ready for polished concrete, stain, or sealer. Free written estimate on every job.

  • Avoids costly slab tear-out and disposal
  • Seamless surface accepts polish, stain, or sealer

Is micro-topping right for your slab?

Reading a Pittsburgh Concrete Slab Before You Commit

Not every slab is a candidate for a direct polish or stain. Basement floors in older Pittsburgh homes often carry decades of patch repairs, surface spalling, or mismatched sections that make a uniform finish impossible without first building a new surface on top. That is the job a self-leveling underlayment or micro-topping is designed to handle.

A micro-topping is a polymer-modified overlay, just a few millimetres thick, trowelled onto a mechanically prepared substrate. It bonds tightly to the existing concrete and produces a continuous, smooth plane with no seams. Once cured, that new surface accepts polished concrete, stained concrete, or a clear sealer just as cleanly as a freshly poured slab would.

The boundary where micro-topping stops being the right answer is structural damage: a slab that heaves seasonally, cracks that open and close with movement, or a failed base underneath. Those conditions call for tear-out, not a surface treatment. Pittsburgh Concrete walks every slab before quoting and tells you plainly which category it falls into. See our concrete cost guide for a sense of how the two options compare on price.

How Pittsburgh Concrete Micro-Topping Gets Installed

  1. On-site slab assessment

We walk the floor, check for structural movement, map existing patches and spalls, run a moisture test, and confirm the finish going on top. The assessment determines the prep sequence and the topping system specified for the job.

  2. Mechanical surface preparation

The concrete is ground or shot-blasted to open the surface profile and remove any laitance, old sealer, or contamination. Cracks and voids that fall within cosmetic tolerance are filled and feathered flush before priming.

  3. Primer coat and first topping lift

A manufacturer-specified primer goes down to lock the substrate and promote adhesion. The first lift of polymer-modified topping follows while the primer is still in the window, trowelled tight and thin across the full floor.

  4. Additional lifts, burnish, and cure

Subsequent lifts build to the target thickness. Each pass is worked to blend with the previous one. The surface is burnished to the texture the finish above requires, then held on the cure schedule before any polish, stain, or sealer is applied.

Choosing the finish above

Polished Concrete, Stained Slab, or Epoxy Floor, What Goes Over the Topping

A micro-topping is a prepared canvas, not the final look. The most common finish we apply over it in Pittsburgh homes is a polished concrete floor: the topping grinds and polishes cleanly, producing a hard, reflective surface that holds up well in kitchens, living areas, and finished basements.

For rooms where colour and warmth matter more than sheen, an acid or water-based stain works into the topping and then gets locked under a penetrating sealer. The result reads as a natural, layered floor rather than a coating sitting on top. Where a homeowner wants a tougher, more chemical-resistant surface, a residential epoxy floor bonds directly to the topping and gives the room a seamless, easy-clean finish.

Radiant heat is also compatible. If the plan includes in-floor heating, heated floor underlayment encases the tubing first, then the micro-topping goes over it, and the finish above completes the stack. The whole assembly conducts heat evenly and the surface shows no evidence of what is underneath. Check the Pittsburgh Concrete blog for more on pairing floor systems with radiant heat.

Common questions

Pittsburgh Homeowners Ask About Micro-Topping

Thickness, suitable slabs, finish options, and what the overlay cannot fix, plain answers for Pittsburgh floors.

A few millimetres total, applied in lifts. It is not a full overlay; it is a thin resurfacing that bonds to the substrate and gives the next finish a clean canvas.
When the slab has structural problems, heaving, deep cracks that move, base failure. The topping fixes a cosmetic-grade slab problem, not a structural one. We assess the slab and tell you straight which side of the line it is on.
Any of the interior finishes we install, polish, stain, or a clear sealer. The topping is engineered to take them all.
Done properly, no. The lifts blend together and the burnish produces a uniform surface. We pre-test on a sample area for tricky finishes to confirm the look before doing the whole floor.
Yes. Heated floor underlayment goes down first to encase the radiant heat tubing, then the micro-topping over it, then the finish above. The whole stack works as one heated floor system.

★★★★★

Old basement slab was patched and ugly. They micro-topped it then polished, and now it reads as a brand-new floor without the tear-out and mess of a replacement.

Saved us a slab replacement on the main floor. Micro-topping plus stain plus seal gave us exactly the look we wanted, and the existing slab is hidden underneath.

Knew the answer when they walked in, micro-topping was the move because of how patched our slab was. Done in less than a week and the new floor looks seamless.

Combined with heated floor underlayment underneath. The radiant heat warms the topping evenly and the finished floor is exactly the same look top to bottom.
