Slope Retention Built Right: Poured Concrete Retaining Walls
When a Pittsburgh yard slopes steeply or a driveway cuts into a hillside, a poured concrete retaining wall holds the grade change in place. We engineer the slab footing below frost depth, form and reinforce the wall face, and install drainage behind it so water pressure never builds. The result is a wall that stays plumb and dry for decades.

Why poured concrete wins
When to Choose Poured Over Block for Retaining
Three failure modes plague residential retaining walls: undersized design that can't handle the load, trapped water pressure that pushes the wall over time, and shallow footings that heave in winter freeze cycles. A properly engineered poured concrete wall eliminates all three by design.
Poured walls excel for tall slopes, long continuous runs, and situations where a driveway or structure sits above the wall. The single monolithic face also reads cleaner than stacked block coursing. For modest grade changes on shorter runs, a block retaining wall often delivers better value. We assess your site and recommend the right approach.
Many projects pair a poured wall with basement waterproofing or concrete sidewalk work where the wall ties into adjacent flatwork or the home foundation.
The sequence
How Poured Retaining Walls Get Built in Pittsburgh
-
Design to the load and slope
An engineer calculates footing depth, wall thickness, rebar placement and drainage requirements based on the height, soil type, and any surcharge (driveway, structure) above the wall.
-
Excavate and form the footing
The footing trench goes below the frost line, typically several feet in Pittsburgh. Forms are set, rebar is tied, and the footing is poured as a solid base that resists winter heave.
-
Form, reinforce and pour the wall
Formwork is erected straight and true. Vertical and horizontal rebar is tied with proper lap lengths and keyway connection to the footing. The wall is poured in one continuous lift and consolidated to eliminate voids.
-
Install drainage and backfill
Drainage stone is placed against the back face. A perforated drain pipe at the footing level routes water to daylight or the property storm system. The cut is backfilled with the drainage path confirmed open.
The hidden failure point
Why Drainage Determines Wall Lifespan
Water trapped behind a retaining wall multiplies the soil load exponentially. Over months and years, hydrostatic pressure can push even a heavily reinforced wall past its design limit. Most failed walls didn't fail from weak concrete; they failed from water. This is why drainage is the first conversation on every retaining wall project we take on.
Every poured wall we build includes drainage stone against the back face and a perforated pipe at the footing tied to daylight or storm drainage. Skipping drainage is the costliest shortcut in residential concrete work. Adding it costs a small percentage of the total and gives the wall its full design life. We apply the same standard across all residential concrete work, from foundation work to outdoor flatwork.

What Pittsburgh Homeowners Say About Their Poured Retaining Walls
Engineered, drained, footing below frost. Wall is plumb to within a fraction, drainage is dry behind it. Worth doing once and properly; the yard finally makes sense.
Holding back the cut for our walkout basement and the driveway above it. Single continuous face, no joint pattern to weather. Looks like part of the architecture.
Drainage was their first conversation, not the concrete. Got the why right; the wall is dry behind, stable in front, and stayed that way through spring melt.
Engineer worked directly with the crew. Calcs to drawings to pour, nothing got fudged. The wall is bombproof and the budget held to the dollar.
