Concrete Counters Built for Pittsburgh Outdoor Kitchens
A concrete counter sitting outside faces rain, snow, freeze-thaw cycles, UV and road salt. We build them to handle all of it. Air-entrained mix, sloped surfaces that shed water, sealed for weather. The result is a durable outdoor kitchen counter or BBQ surround that looks sharp through winters. Free written estimate.
- Air-entrained freeze-thaw mix
- Sloped for drainage, not pooling
- Exterior sealer included
The outdoor difference
Why Outdoor Concrete Counters Need Different Engineering
Indoor counters handle food prep, heat and spills. Outdoor ones must also shed rain, survive freeze-thaw, resist UV and handle salt drift from winter roads. That means the mix, the slope, the edge profile and the sealer all change.
We specify an air-entrained concrete mix rated for freeze-thaw so water trapped inside the slab can expand without spalling the surface. Every horizontal surface slopes to shed water rather than collect it. Edges are profiled so meltwater drips cleanly off the front. The finish is slightly more textured than indoor for grip, and sealed with an exterior-grade sealer that handles UV and our winters.
When the outdoor counter is part of a larger outdoor space, we tie it into the pool deck or patio below so levels and finishes align. Indoor counters in the same home can match in color and finish family, see indoor countertops for details. We also coordinate with outdoor kitchen bases and any roofed shelter.
The sequence
How Outdoor Countertops Get Built in Pittsburgh
-
Measure the outdoor footprint
We visit the site and confirm the counter dimensions, any appliance cutouts (cooktop, burner, sink, ice bin), the overhang depth, and how the counter connects to the surrounding patio, kitchen base or shelter.
-
Form with drainage slope
Forms are built so every horizontal surface slopes slightly to shed water. Edge details are profiled to drip meltwater cleanly. Reinforcement is sized for the spans and the freeze-thaw cycle we see here.
-
Pour and cure the slab
We use an air-entrained concrete mix rated for freeze-thaw, place and consolidate it, and allow it to cure on schedule. The surface is then ground, honed and finished to the texture chosen, usually slightly more textured than indoor for grip.
-
Seal for weather protection
An exterior sealer rated for UV, freeze-thaw and salt drift is applied. We provide a re-seal schedule (typically every few years in Pittsburgh) so you know when to refresh the surface and keep it looking new.

Outdoor Counters That Last Through Winter
An indoor concrete countertop poured outside will spall by its second winter. A beautiful surface poured without slope will hold meltwater and stain. The mix design and the geometry are what separate outdoor counters from indoor ones; everything else is finish choice.
We coordinate outdoor counters with the broader hardscape. If the counter is part of a full outdoor kitchen, we align it with the base structure. If it sits on a patio, we match levels and finishes. For pool-deck bars, we ensure proper drainage and slip resistance.

Common questions
Outdoor Concrete Countertop Questions, Answered
Freeze-thaw mix, drainage, sealers and matching outdoor counters to indoor.
BBQ surround counter with a side-burner cutout. Two winters in, zero spalling, drains beautifully, sealer is doing its job. Outdoor kitchen feels permanent now.
Pool-bar counter in a finish that matches our indoor kitchen counters. Same family, slightly more texture outside. The match is a real conversation piece.
They were straight that outdoor counters need re-sealing every few years and built that into the price up front. The first refresh kept the surface looking new. Worth doing.
Edge profile drains meltwater perfectly, no ice ridges along the front like other concrete counters we have seen. The detail work is what makes this last.
