Why concrete

When Concrete Countertops Beat Stone

Stone countertops come in fixed slabs with fixed edges. Concrete countertops come in your dimensions, your color, your edge profile, and your custom details. If you want an integrated drainboard, a cast-in sink, glass or stone inlays, or an edge that matches your cabinetry, concrete is the only way to get it. That is the whole point.

The casting method depends on your situation. Cast-in-place means we build the form on your cabinets, pour and finish the concrete right there, which works best for long runs and seamless transitions. Shop-cast means we make the slab in our facility, cure it fully, and install it in pieces, which keeps your kitchen clean during the build and works well for islands and vanities.

We tie the countertop into the rest of your residential concrete work and coordinate with outdoor countertop projects when you want matching indoor and outdoor surfaces.

The sequence

How We Build Concrete Countertops in Pittsburgh

  1. On-site template and design lock

We measure your cabinets or vanity, mark every sink cutout, cooktop opening, faucet hole, and edge detail. You pick the color, finish level (matte, satin, or polished), and any inlays or custom features. Nothing moves forward until the design is locked.

  2. Build forms and place reinforcement

Forms are built to match your template exactly, with the edge profile inverted on the bottom for cast-in-place work or the top for shop-cast. Rebar or wire mesh is positioned at the right depth, color pigment is added to the concrete mix, and any inlay materials are set in place.

  3. Pour, cure, and grind the surface

Concrete is placed and vibrated to remove air, then left to cure on schedule. Once cured, the surface is ground smooth, honed to your chosen finish level, and polished if needed. The result is a smooth, durable surface ready for sealing.

  4. Seal and hand off the maintenance plan

A food-safe sealer rated for kitchen use is applied to protect the concrete from stains and spills. You get a written maintenance schedule showing when to re-seal (typically every few years) so the countertop stays protected and looking new.

Real kitchen use

Sealed Concrete Handles Daily Kitchen Work

A concrete countertop is a working surface. It takes hot pans, knife marks, spills, and the wear of a busy kitchen. The sealer is what protects it. A properly sealed countertop resists stains and spills; an unsealed or poorly maintained one can pick up marks. We are direct about that on every quote because the maintenance matters as much as the installation.

A kitchen countertop gets a different sealer recommendation than a guest bath countertop because the use is different. We build the long-term care plan into the quote from the start, not as an afterthought. That is how we handle every residential concrete project, and it is how we handle countertops. See our concrete care guide for the full maintenance schedule.

Common questions

Indoor Concrete Countertop Questions, Answered

Cast-in-place vs shop-cast, sealers, food-safety, maintenance and edge profiles.

Cast-in-place is best for long integrated runs, integrated drainboards and seamless looks; shop-cast is best when the kitchen has to stay clean during construction and the pieces can be lifted into place. We recommend based on your kitchen and timeline.
Yes, when sealed with a food-safe sealer rated for kitchen use and maintained on the recommended re-seal schedule. Concrete itself is inert; the sealer is what stands between the surface and the spills, and it is what gets refreshed every few years.
Properly designed and cured concrete countertops do not crack in normal use. We engineer reinforcement and joints for the size and use of each top; hairline crazing in the surface is a normal characteristic of concrete and part of the look, not a structural issue.
Yes. Custom edge profiles (square, eased, ogee), inlays (glass, stone, wood), and integrated cast-in sinks are all options. Most of what makes a custom concrete countertop worth choosing over stone is the ability to do those things.
From template to install is typically several weeks because casting and curing are time-bound; the in-kitchen disruption itself is shorter, often just install day for shop-cast or a few days for cast-in-place. Full timeline is on the quote.

Cast-in-place island with an integrated drainboard. Could not have gotten this in stone. Honed finish, integral color, sealed beautifully. The kitchen now has its centerpiece.

Shop-cast vanity with an integrated basin. They templated, cast offsite, installed clean, sealed it. Bath now feels custom in the best way. Maintenance plan was clear up front.

Honest that concrete tops need re-sealing every few years and counted that into the quote. Better than pretending it would never need any care. The counter still looks new after two years.

Custom edge profile that matched our cabinetry detail exactly. Could not get that anywhere else. The kitchen looks designed, not assembled. Worth every dollar.
