When overlay makes sense
Ardex Overlay Systems for Concrete Resurfacing
A concrete slab that is structurally intact but visually worn or out of spec does not need replacement. An Ardex overlay bonds to the existing surface and delivers the finish and durability the space requires, at a fraction of the cost of tear-out and new pour. Ardex manufactures overlays for every scenario: thin decorative microtoppings for showrooms and entries, polishable systems for retail floors, stamped overlays for patios and hardscape, and structural overlays for high-traffic areas.
Installation quality determines whether the system performs as warranted. We follow Ardex protocols for surface prep, primer selection, material mixing, placement thickness, and cure timing. That compliance is what makes the warranty valid and the overlay durable.
If the slab has structural damage or is beyond repair, we recommend full replacement through our concrete driveway or commercial floor services. For cracks and spalls that need addressing before overlay, we use Ardex repair mortars to prepare the surface.
Installation sequence
How Ardex Overlay Installation Works
-
Evaluate the slab
We inspect the existing concrete for structural integrity, surface condition, moisture levels, and any cracks or spalls. This assessment determines which Ardex overlay system is appropriate and what prep work is needed.
-
Prepare per Ardex spec
The surface is diamond-ground to the correct profile, cleaned of contaminants, and any damaged areas are repaired with compatible material. The Ardex primer matched to the overlay system is applied to ensure proper bonding.
-
Place and finish overlay
The Ardex overlay is mixed to exact ratios, placed at the specified thickness, and finished to the desired appearance (smooth trowel, polished, stamped, or textured as the system allows).
-
Cure and protect
The overlay cures on the Ardex schedule. Once cured, the topcoat or sealer specified by the system is applied. You receive the warranty documentation and care instructions at handoff.
Installer expertise matters
Ardex Warranty Depends on Spec Compliance
Ardex systems are engineered products. The warranty covers the material and the system design, but only when the installer follows Ardex specifications for prep, primer, mix ratios, placement, and cure. Cutting corners on any step voids the warranty and risks premature failure. We install to spec because that is the only way the system performs as intended.
If the slab needs flatness correction before overlay, we coordinate with Ardex self-leveling underlayment. For spalls or cracks, we use Ardex repair systems to prepare the surface. Every step is part of the system.
