Mapei Concrete Systems Built for Pittsburgh Renovations

When a floor renovation needs a leveling compound, waterproofing and tile adhesive all working as one system, Mapei is the product family we reach for. We install Mapei from substrate prep through final cure, following the manufacturer's published specs so your warranty stays valid and every layer bonds to the next. Substrate to finish

How Mapei Concrete Products Fit the Job

A renovation floor starts with a slab that may be uneven, damp or both. Mapei self-leveling compounds (Ultraplan, Novoplan) flatten the substrate so tile, vinyl plank or polished concrete can go down without shimming or telegraphing. The leveler cures to a sound, stable base.

Wet areas and below-grade spaces need moisture control. Mapei waterproofing membranes bond directly into the Mapei adhesive system above, creating a sealed envelope instead of separate layers that can fail at the boundary. For concrete that has cracked or spalled, Mapei repair mortars and bonding agents restore the surface to spec before the finish goes down.

The strength of this approach is chemistry compatibility. Primer, leveler, membrane and adhesive are all engineered to work together, which is why we also use Sika systems and Ardex products the same way, and why commercial floor installs benefit from the same discipline.

Installation sequence

Installing Mapei Concrete Systems Step by Step

  1. Assess substrate and select the Mapei line

We evaluate the slab condition, moisture levels and the finish that will sit on top, then specify which Mapei products (leveler, waterproofing, adhesive) match the job requirements.

  2. Mechanically profile and prime the concrete

The slab is ground or shot-blasted to the profile Mapei calls for, moisture-tested, and primed with the Mapei primer formulated for that product line.

  3. Mix and apply per published ratios

Mapei products go down at the water ratio, temperature and working time the spec sheet defines. No shortcuts, no substitutions, so the system performs as tested.

  4. Document cure and hand off warranty data

Each layer cures on the Mapei schedule. We photograph the install, keep the data sheets and give you the documentation so your warranty is clear and transferable.

System thinking

Why Mapei Concrete Bonding Beats Mixed Brands

Floor failures almost always start at a layer boundary. When primer does not bond to leveler, or leveler does not bond to adhesive, the whole system fails. Choosing one product family eliminates that risk because every component is engineered to bond to the layers above and below.

That is why Mapei Ultraplan and Novoplan pair with Mapei primers and Mapei tile adhesives, and why Mapei waterproofing integrates into the same finish chain. The same logic drives our basement waterproofing and warehouse floor installs.

Common questions

Mapei Concrete Questions, Answered

Self-leveling, waterproofing, system compatibility and what Mapei does best in Pittsburgh.

Mapei Ultraplan and Novoplan are tested, predictable products with deep installer support. They pour to a flat, sound surface that takes a finish without telegraphing the slab below, which is exactly what a renovation needs.
Yes, that is one of its strengths. Mapei waterproofing membranes are designed to bond into Mapei thinset and tile adhesives, so the wet-area floor is one continuous system instead of a stack of unrelated layers.
Because every layer boundary is a place where bond failure can happen. Using a single product family means primer, leveler, waterproofing and adhesive are engineered to work together, removing the surprise bond issues.
Yes, when prep is done right. Mapei repair and adhesive products bond patched and existing concrete back to performance spec when the substrate is mechanically profiled and primed correctly.
Yes. We install the published Mapei system, primer, body, finish, in the correct sequence and at the temperature and mix ratio the spec calls for, so the product warranty stays intact.
