When Your Pittsburgh Concrete Steps Need Fixing

Settled treads, spalled edges, cracked risers. Not every step problem means tearing out the whole flight. We assess each tread individually, determine what can be lifted, what can be patched, and what must be replaced. The result is a safe, functional staircase at a fraction of new-construction cost. Why repair beats replacement

Targeted Concrete Step Repair Costs Less

A full flight replacement is a major undertaking. Step repair is not. When you look at a failing staircase, what you often see is one or two bad treads making the whole flight look compromised. By addressing only the treads that are actually failing, you restore safety and usability without the expense of a complete pour.

Lifting a settled tread back to grade using slab-jacking, patching a spalled nose with bonded repair mortar, or replacing a single cracked tread to match the surrounding flight, these targeted fixes work when the underlying structure is sound. We do not recommend repair when it does not make sense. If the footing is wrong, if the rise and run are non-code, or if the concrete is failing across most of the flight, we say so in the estimate and recommend new entry steps or a complete staircase instead.

This same logic applies to our sidewalk and walkway repair work, where fixing only what is broken saves money and extends the life of the concrete.

The repair sequence

How We Assess and Fix Concrete Steps in Pittsburgh

  1. Walk the flight with you

We inspect each tread, identify settlement, spalling, cracks, edge chips and surface wear. We classify which treads are candidates for lifting, which need patching, and which require replacement.

  2. Lift settled treads back to grade

Where the tread body is intact but has settled, slab-jacking raises it back to its original elevation. This restores consistent rise and run across the flight, making the stairs safe and even to climb.

  3. Patch spalled and chipped edges

Road salt and freeze-thaw damage spall the edges of treads and risers. We apply a bonded repair mortar that matches the original color, finish it to the original profile, and protect it through cure.

  4. Replace treads that are beyond repair

Treads that are cracked through, missing footing, or structurally compromised get cut out and re-poured to match the surrounding flight in rise, run, finish and color.

Knowing when to stop repairing

Not Every Step Flight Can Be Repaired

Repair works when failures are isolated, the substructure is sound, and the original rise and run meet code. It fails when the whole flight has shifted, when the rise and run were wrong from the start, or when the footing is missing or compromised (causing heaving every winter).

On every assessment we tell you which category your flight is in. If repair is just throwing money at a doomed staircase, the quote will recommend new front entry steps or a fresh staircase instead. That honesty saves you time and money.

Common questions

Step Repair Questions, Answered

Lifting treads, patching edges, sectional replacement and when a flight has to come out entirely.

Yes, often. We saw-cut around the failing tread, remove it cleanly, and pour a new tread to match the surrounding rise/run, finish and color. The repair is visible but the flight is safe and working at a fraction of full-replacement cost.
A bonded repair mortar that matches color is applied to the spalled edge, finished to the original profile, and protected through cure. Done right, the patch lasts as long as the surrounding step; done wrong it pops off in a season. We do it the right way.
Often, where the step body itself is sound. Slab-jacking lifts a settled but otherwise intact tread back to its original elevation, restoring even rise across the flight. Where the tread is also cracked, sectional replacement is the better call.
When the rise/run is non-code, when the footing is wrong (steps heaving every winter), or when most treads have failed. In those cases, repairs chase the same problem forever. A fresh flight is the honest answer; the quote will say so.
Most step repairs are a half-day to a day per visit; tread replacements that include cure time stretch across two days. The schedule is in the written quote so you can plan around the temporary loss of access.

One tread had cracked through, the rest were fine. They replaced just that one, matched the rest, and the flight is safe and even again. Far less than a full replacement.

Edge spalling from road salt on three risers. Patched with matching mortar, bonded properly, holding through the next winter. Looks intentional now.

Settled tread lifted back to grade. Took half a day, cost a fraction of replacement, and the rise across the flight is consistent again. Smart fix.

Honest assessment that the whole flight was past repair and a new pour was the right call. Could have charged me for patches that would have failed. Trust earned.
