Ground and Polished Concrete Floors for Pittsburgh Retail

When a commercial space needs a floor that reflects light, resists wear, and requires minimal upkeep, polished concrete delivers. We grind your existing slab through progressive diamond grits, apply a chemical densifier to harden the surface, and polish to your chosen gloss level. The result is the slab itself as the finished floor, lasting decades without coatings to peel or reapply. Free written estimate on every project.

Why polished concrete works

Grinding and Polishing Turns Your Slab Into a Finish

Polished concrete is fundamentally different from coated floors. Instead of applying a layer on top of the slab, we mechanically refine the concrete itself using diamond grits that progressively grind, hone and polish the surface. A penetrating densifier hardens the concrete chemically, and the final grit pass determines the gloss level you want. The floor is the slab, not a coating on it.

This approach works best in spaces where durability matters more than design flexibility, where foot traffic is steady, and where the aesthetic of exposed aggregate or a uniform cream finish fits the brand. Showrooms benefit from the light reflection; offices appreciate the low maintenance; retail spaces gain a distinctive look that epoxy cannot match.

Our commercial epoxy flooring service handles spaces that need color or chemical resistance. For slabs that are badly out of plane, self-leveling underlayment prepares the surface first. See all commercial floor options and the full commercial concrete scope.

The sequence

How We Grind and Polish Your Commercial Slab

  1. Evaluate the existing slab

We inspect the concrete for flatness, hardness and surface condition, note any cracks or spalls that need repair before polishing begins, and confirm your target gloss level and aggregate exposure preference.

  2. Grind through coarse grits

Progressive coarse diamond grits flatten the slab, expose the aggregate level you chose (cream, salt-and-pepper or full), and prepare the surface for the honing phase.

  3. Apply densifier and hone

A chemical densifier penetrates the concrete to harden it, then progressive honing grits refine the texture and begin building the sheen.

  4. Final polish and guard

The final polishing grits bring the slab to your chosen gloss level, matte, satin or high-sheen, and a protective guard coat is applied for the first months of use.

Finish and upkeep

Polished Concrete Reveals the Slab You Have

The aggregate exposure level you select before polishing determines the final look. Cream-only gives a soft, uniform appearance with no stones visible. Salt-and-pepper shows small aggregate scattered across the surface. Full aggregate exposes larger stones for a terrazzo-like aesthetic. We always grind a small mockup area on your actual slab so you see the real finish before we commit to the full floor.

Maintenance is straightforward. Daily dust mopping or auto-scrubbing keeps the floor sharp. The densifier is refreshed periodically (every few years depending on traffic volume) to maintain surface hardness. Unlike epoxy systems, there is no waxing, stripping or top-coat reapplication. Polished concrete is honest about the slab, showing shrinkage cracks and patches as part of the character.

If your space has multiple floor zones, coordinate anti-slip flooring or floor repair work alongside the polish. Check the care and maintenance guide for long-term upkeep schedules.

Common questions

Polished Concrete Questions, Answered

Aggregate exposure, gloss levels, maintenance and when polished beats other finishes.

Most can, but very rough or very out-of-tolerance slabs need preparation first. We assess the existing slab, identify any work needed (crack repair, spall patching, self-leveling underlayment for badly out-of-tolerance areas), and quote that work alongside the polish.
Three common levels: cream-only (soft uniform finish, no aggregate showing), salt-and-pepper (small aggregate exposed), and full aggregate (large stones exposed, terrazzo-like look). We mock up a small area on your slab so you choose with the actual concrete in front of you.
Matte for low-glare, soft retail; satin for offices and general commercial; high-sheen for showrooms and where light reflection is the design goal. We agree the level up front; the final grit pass is what determines it.
Daily dust mopping or auto-scrubbing keeps it looking sharp. The densifier is periodically refreshed (every several years depending on traffic) to maintain hardness. No waxing, no stripping, no top-coat re-application like with an epoxy.
Floor area drives the timeline; a typical commercial polish runs over several days from grind to final polish and guard. Most of that is the polish work itself; the floor is usable shortly after the guard cures. The full schedule is in the quote.

Polished slab in our showroom. Reflects the lighting beautifully, no maintenance beyond a daily auto-scrub. Three years in, the floor looks the same as the install day.

Salt-and-pepper exposure was the right choice for our office; not too busy, not too plain. The mockup before the full polish was the moment we knew.

High-sheen polish in a car showroom. The vehicles look incredible on the reflective floor, and the maintenance is dramatically lower than the epoxy we had before.
