Pattern-Stamped Concrete for Pittsburgh Commercial Entries
Stamped concrete delivers the visual appeal of natural stone or masonry on a durable, engineered slab built for public foot traffic and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. We pour the base, add integral color throughout, stamp the pattern at the right plasticity window, and seal with a UV-rated finish. The result is a finished surface that reads as high-end architectural concrete and holds its appearance for years with routine maintenance.

Built to last
Why Stamped Concrete Fails (and How We Avoid It)
The typical failure happens when a contractor pours thin concrete, skips proper base prep, and applies a decorative stamp without engineering the slab underneath. Within two Pittsburgh winters, the surface cracks through, the color fades, and the pattern becomes illegible. The stamped finish is only as good as the slab it sits on.
Our approach mirrors our commercial parking lot standards: correct subgrade compaction, gravel base, slab thickness matched to the load, reinforcement, and a joint pattern that controls cracking. Once the slab is sound, we add the integral color (which runs throughout the concrete, not just on top), stamp at the precise moment of plasticity for crisp detail, and apply a commercial-grade sealer rated for UV exposure and our climate.
The stamped surface then becomes a long-term asset. Coordinate with adjacent commercial sidewalk work and retaining wall installations so transitions are clean. See our stained concrete option if a different aesthetic fits better.

How Stamped Concrete Gets Installed in Pittsburgh
-
Confirm pattern and color on-site
We bring sample boards showing the stamped pattern (stone, brick, ashlar, cobble, or custom) and the integral color options. You see real samples at full scale before we pour, so the final look is confirmed in advance.
-
Prepare base and set slab specs
Subgrade is compacted, gravel base is laid, and the slab thickness and reinforcement are sized for the intended use (foot traffic, occasional vehicle access, fire lane requirements). Joint layout is planned to control cracking.
-
Pour, consolidate, and stamp
Concrete with integral color is placed and consolidated to remove air. At the right window of plasticity, the stamping tools are applied with consistent pressure to create a crisp, uniform pattern across the entire surface.
-
Cure, seal, and hand off maintenance
The slab cures per specification, then a UV- and freeze-thaw-rated sealer is applied at the chosen gloss level. We provide a maintenance schedule and sealer specification so re-sealing happens on time.
Long-term performance
The Sealer Cycle Is the Key to Durability
A stamped slab that gets resealed every three to four years looks identical to the day it was installed, even after a decade of public use. The same slab without re-sealing fades, dulls, and loses its visual impact. The sealer is the working component; the slab and integral color are permanent.
We hand off a written maintenance plan at project completion that specifies the re-seal interval, the sealer product, and the application method. Coordinate the re-seal schedule with any adjacent ADA ramp or curb and gutter work so the entire site stays cohesive. Our concrete blog has articles on sealer selection and care.

Stamped entry plaza at our office tower, integral color matching the brick. Three years in, sealed twice on schedule, looks like the day it went in. Worth the right install.
Stamped circle drive entry that reads like real stone from the curb. Guests comment on it constantly. The maintenance is one weekend every few years, fair trade.
Stamped plaza ties into the surrounding sidewalk pattern cleanly. They coordinated all the work in one project, no improvisation at the transitions. Real planning.
